L'enigma di De Chirico
Bozzetti e figurini per "I Puritani" del I Maggio Musicale Fiorentino

Florence, Palazzo Strozzi, 1 May - 22 June 2010

On occasion of the inauguration of the 73rd edition of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (29 April - 22 June 2010), Palazzo Strozzi hosted an exhibition of drawings, sketches and costume designs realized by Giorgio de Chirico for the 1933 production of Vincenzo Bellini's opera "I Puritani". At the time of their creation, these drawings' stylistic and formal innovations were not understood, and would engender great scandal.
The content of the catalogue entitled 1933. De Chirico al I Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Edizioni Mandragora, Florence) is centred around a discussion on this revolutionary body of works between the exhibition's curators Paolo Baldacci and Gerd Roos, Moreno Bucci (curator of the Archivio Storico del Teatro del Maggio Musicale), Luigi Cupellini (architect and designer), Federico Tiezzi (director and playwright) and Sylvano Bussotti (composer, director, set and costume designer), with art historian, Ludovica Sebregondi and Director of Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, James Bradburne acting as moderators.
